How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves
Author: Joan Bailey   Recommend Reading
amazon review: "Chapters 5 and 6 should be required reading for everyprospective puppy buyer." (Bill McClure of
American Hunter.) "...One of the finest books on gun-dog training to cross my desk in a long
time...The book is based on the premise that much of a dog's behavior is established during the first 16
weeks of life...The information she provides can prevent a whole host of headaches later in the dog's
development...Bailey's book has been acclaimed by most of the dog training gurus in North America,
including Field & Stream's Bill Tarrant and Outdoor Life's Larry Mueller." (George Gruenefeld,
writing for The Montreal Gazette.) "Joan Bailey's credentials as an author on this topic are first-rate.
She's familiar with the classic works in the field, has a wealth of experience as editor of The Gun Dog
Supreme...and has been a field trial judge of versatile hunting dogs for almost two decades...HOW TO
HELP GUN DOGS TRAIN THEMSELVES offers an organized and readable approach to training."

Point! : Training the All-Seasons Birddog 1st Edition - Hardcover
Author: James B. Spencer
amazon review: I was particularly interested in how the author described the way various breeds react to different training - for example, a Brittany will generally respond to a very soft taining hand and lots of praise; while German Shorthair will (generally) respond to a stronger hand with less praise. This is important to me as I'm about to start with a GSP, having trained primarily Brittanies in the past. Another aspect of this book which I found both refreshing and educational, was that the author consulted with various professional trainers - both to provide their perspective of the breed they work with, and to give the reader other opinions.

The 10-Minute Retriever : How to Make a Well-Mannered, Obedientand Enthusiastic Gun Dog in 10 Minutes a Day
Author: John I. Dahl, Amy Dahl
amazon review: " The Dahls have written a training book that no retriever owner should be without! Whether your aim is a hunting partner, hunt test or field trial competitor, or even if you're a novice and want to train your dog for what it was bred for, help is here.
Time is the thing most of us lack, so here is a program everyone can use, from professional to amateur, to train his or her own dog in easy increments spending only 10 minutes a day. The Dahls are professionals, and they've trained, shown, competed and hunted with all the retriever breeds. But they've presented their information in a very readable format, interspersed with real-life tales of actual dogs.
The 10-Minute Retriever is highly readable (you'll devour it in one or two sittings) but also well-organized complete with a glossary and index to refer to. I can't say enough good things about it, and my fellow retriever owners who've read it all agree.

The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training : A Realistic Approach to Training Close-Working Gun Dogs for Tight Cover Conditions
Author: Jerry Robinson, Jerome B. Hunt
amazon review: The theme couldn't be clearer: The author states "the average field-trial dog is not the kind of shooting dog today's bird hunter is looking for. We don't hunt on horseback, we hunt on our feet ... we want dogs that stay with us ... but that doesn't mean we want dogs that just potter about underfoot ... a good close-hunting gun dog has all the style and class of a good field-trial dog ... but he operates on a shorter string"
And rest of the book is well organized and presented in a highly useful manner which reflects the years of experience of a gun-dog editor who has sought opinions of outstanding trainers. The coins I invested in this book were well spent. My only question is simply this : what took me so long to find this book!

Gun Dog Breeds : A Guide to Spaniels, Retrievers, and Pointing Dogs
Author: Charles Fergus
Gun Dog Breeds amazon review: " A very honest look at various flushing, pointing, and retrieving breeds. Includes strengths and weaknesses of each breed, ease of training, suitability to certain types of game, etc. Is now somewhat dated and does not reflect emerging interest in a few of the rarer continental gun dogs, which are given only a brief mention in the back of the book. Was also written before the recent explosive growth in popularity of the field-bred English Cocker. Fergus' bias toward flushing dogs shows through a bit, as he neglects to mention the pointing breeds' invaluable use in covering wide open tracts of land (which saves the hunter the task of doing so). Still, these are minor criticisms, and most first-time gun dog would likely be better of with a retriever or spaniel anyway, for reasons Fergus states. This book should be required reading for all first-time buyers of gun dogs, too many of whom end up buying a dog completely unsuited for their hunting purposes and lifestyle---often because of some of "sales copy" they read on a breeder's website or in some other dog book. The more objective approach in this book will not only help hunters avoid such mistakes, it may also help reduce the number of unwanted gun dogs submitted to shelters annually by people who find out too late that such dogs are more than they can handle."
